MUSICAL DOLL; Naked Harp by Omnia

Naked Harp

Naked Harp by Omnia is the latest album to grace my music collection.  I had never heard of this pagan band before, but I was drawn to the album because the cover immediately reminded me of the artwork of Victoria Frances and sure enough, on further investigation I discovered that she had actually illustrated the entire album, so of course I bought it right away.

This album brings together everything I love in pagan artistry. Jenny's harp music and Victoria's art were meant for each other.  This is a unique and beautiful collaboration.  After piano, the harp is my second favourite musical instrument which is why I agreed to collaborate and write the sleeve notes and poetry for harpist Patricia Spero's Fairy Nights album a few years ago.  I just love the sound of harp music and I find it very soothing.

Omnia's Naked Harp is a mix of original compositions and popular folk tunes from England, Scotland, Ireland and France.  There are familiar tunes on here that I remember singing in the school choir, while others are a delightful discovery and sure to become new favourites.

The sleeve notes for the album resembles a miniature picture book. Each of the tracks is fully explained, along with personal anecdotes and an original illustration from Victoria Frances.  I highly recommend the CD version over a download, because you would miss out on the artwork if you got the digital copy and this is one of those albums that is a beautiful work of art in its own right - just look at that cover for a start! Its so fey and magical and whimsical.

The music is very relaxing and designed to carry you off to a magical world of melody and enchantment.  I have been playing Naked Harp non-stop since I got it and it has fast become my go-to album for when I am sat stitching tapestry or embroidery - it has that calming, old fashioned charm about it.

Some of my favourite tracks from the album are Love Birds, Luna, Anam Cara and The Flutterby Set.  It really is an enchanting musical experience to escape to, so here is a taster from You Tube ...enjoy!

Bright Blessings
